Chiropractic prevention care for sports injuries
Few people consider having preventative chiropractic treatments when their body is functioning well with few aches and pains. However, preventative treatments and regular health maintenance can be extremely useful. For a sports enthusiast, it is impossible to completely avoid the risk of injury, and certainly injuries can – and do – occur quickly, and with little warning.
Typically, there is greater risk when training is extensive, such as injuries through repetitive motions, impact or through failing to warm up sufficiently prior to training. Injuries can also occur to people embarking upon a new and perhaps too demanding exercise regime.
It takes very little for the pain of injury to impact life. Although people think that chiropractic treatments are just for neck or back pain, there are a variety of health conditions treated by a Chiropractor. Myofascial pain is a prime example, where pressure placed upon sensitive points within the muscles can create deep pain experienced in other parts of the body. This typically occurs when a muscle is repeatedly used, and is known as referred pain. Another condition, piriformis syndrome, is where the piriformis muscle irritates or compresses the sciatic nerve, and pain and tingling sensations may be felt through the buttocks and down one or both legs. Numbness may also be experienced.
Chiropractors can help athletes by relieving their pain. These sessions will also aid the recovery process, which is very important. The Chiropractor is likely to encourage regular visits, as this improves balance and performance, so will aid the sports enthusiast considerably. While not everyone will need a maintenance check, those who have a history of recurring injuries would be wise to consider this. There is no doubt that if the body is kept in its correct alignment, there is far better potential to protect itself from injury and encourage healing processes.
Where there have been health issues, the Chiropractor can ascertain the most effective type of preventative care on an individual basis. Each assessment is unique, because the individual’s health needs are unique too. Treatment can work alongside physical therapy and provide a complete or more focused assessment.
It is important to remember that the body is extremely intricate and each part has to run at optimum health and efficiency. Where there are elements that do not function well, pain, the body’s early warning system, occurs and movement or health can quickly become impacted. Where any health condition impacts the individual’s ability to live a normal life, hindered by pain or a reduction in mobility, the Chiropractor can work on spinal adjustments for improved health and release from pain, while also instigating the body’s natural healing properties.
No one would choose to have pain or bouts of recurring pain. As time progresses, regular visits to the Chiropractor help to detect any underlying issues that may be causing problems. Even with preventative care, injuries can still occur: poor posture, lifting poorly, or even sneezing violently can have the momentum to put strain on the neck and back. However, with a proper health care plan such as good nutrition, regular exercise, and preventative chiropractic treatments, health and well-being are optimized for the athlete or otherwise.
