Arthritis is a debilitating and painful disease which can affect both young and older people. It affects much of the population, and with no single cure, people turn to various methods to manage the pain and improve their quality of life. While you may think medication and drugs are the best forms of treatment, there are also physical therapy and chiropractic treatments which should be considered to work alongside these. Have a read through our guide and give us a call to find out how we can help you.

What is arthritis?

Arthritis means inflammation of the joints. Normally inflammation is a part of your body’s healing process, as a reaction to an injury or in defense against bacteria. But for people suffering from arthritis, this inflammation can occur randomly and for no reason. Instead of helping the body, this can damage the joints and cause great pain. There are many types of arthritis which affect different parts of the body, all caused by various factors.

What are the symptoms?

With all the different types of arthritis, there is a wide range of symptoms. Painful joints and movement are common in most, with inflammation and early morning joint stiffness. Tiredness, weight loss, back pain nyc, fevers and a general feeling of being unwell are also symptoms; but these may also be from other illnesses, rather than just arthritis.

How is it diagnosed?

If you suspect you are suffering from arthritis, you should visit your doctor as soon as possible. The doctor will talk through your symptoms and how they are developing, in order to diagnose you, and then arrange any relevant tests or examinations.

What treatments are there?

Once diagnosed, treatments and medication will be discussed and chosen to work around any other health problems and your lifestyle. Painkillers and anti-inflammatories are normally prescribed in order to manage the condition, with surgery sometimes being offered in more severe cases.

Can chiropractic and physical therapy treatments help?

While painkillers and anti-inflammatory medication are very effective at managing the pain, they can damage your stomach lining and general well-being in the long run. Many patients begin looking for alternative treatments, which will benefit them long-term rather than rely on drugs alone.

Most arthritis sufferers can benefit greatly from chiropractic treatments, which should be used initially alongside your doctor’s medical care. Cold laser therapy is a popular procedure offered, which is a non-invasive treatment using lasers to penetrate beneath the skin. Handheld lasers are used on injured or affected areas, emitting the light for a specific amount of time depending on the size of the area. The light passes through the skin layers, reaching the target area, and being absorbed by the cells there. This absorption then increases the intracellular metabolism; encouraging the tissues to heal and reducing pain and inflammation.

Physical therapy is also recommended for many patients and is a great way of strengthening the body and allowing you to overcome some of the symptoms of your arthritis. Hydrotherapy and physiotherapy are both ideal forms of this, which allow you to exercise safely, building muscle strength and improve your general fitness.
